A gravel pit turned city lake

Sparks Marina Park covers about 77 acres in Sparks, Nevada, just east of Reno, a former gravel pit that flooded in the 1997 Truckee River flood and became a city park lake. It is deep for its size, clear, and stocked regularly with rainbow trout, and it also holds largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill and crappie.

Trout through the cool months

Nevada stocks the lake heavily from fall through spring, when the water is cool enough to hold trout well. Bait from the bank, small spinners and spoons, and flies from a float tube all produce. The depth means fish hold well into early summer before warming pushes them down and the trout fishing slows.

Bass and warm-water fishing

Largemouth relate to the rock, the drop-offs and any structure in the clear water, taken on plastics and small crankbaits with lighter line than a stained lake would need. Channel catfish are stocked and take bottom baits in the evening, and bluegill fill the shallows for families through summer.
