Fishing Saranac Lake: the full guide

Three lakes, one system

The Saranac Lakes: Upper, Middle and Lower: form a connected chain in the central Adirondacks, linked by short channels and locks that let boats travel between them. The fishery mixes coldwater and warmwater species: landlocked salmon and lake trout in the deeper basins, northern pike and smallmouth bass along the weed and rock edges, plus brook trout in the tributary ponds and streams that feed the system.

Salmon and lakers

Landlocked salmon are stocked and managed by New York, holding near the surface after ice-out in April and May when trolling streamers and smelt imitations produces best. Lake trout hold deeper, in the 60-100-foot basins of Lower Saranac and Upper Saranac, taking trolled spoons and jigged tubes through the summer. Both species return to shallower water in the fall.

Pike, bass and the islands

Northern pike patrol the weedy bays and channel edges: big spoons and spinnerbaits work through the season, and pike are a mainstay of the winter ice fishery. Smallmouth bass hold on the rocky island edges and points, with excellent topwater fishing at dawn in summer. The island-studded geography means structure is everywhere and navigation requires attention.

Adirondack logistics

State launches serve all three lakes, with the village of Saranac Lake providing supplies, guides and lodging. The chain includes state campsites on the islands, reachable only by boat: a classic Adirondack trip. Wind and sudden weather are the main hazards; the lakes are shallow enough in places that charts matter around the islands.
