The other founding river

The Willowemoc runs 27 miles from the Catskill high country through Livingston Manor to Junction Pool at Roscoe, where it doubles the Beaverkill’s flow. It shares the history: the Catskill Fly Fishing Center sits on its bank, the DeBruce water hosted the sport’s founding generation, and the fly patterns born here still fill every American fly box. It fishes smaller and more intimately than its famous twin, which is exactly why many regulars prefer it.

Upper wild, lower classic

Above DeBruce the creek is a wild-trout stream: brookies and small browns in plunge pools under hemlock shade, best fished with short casts and attractor dries in summer. From DeBruce to Livingston Manor the water opens into the no-kill catch-and-release stretch: bigger holdover browns, technical flat water, and the same hatch calendar as the Beaverkill: Hendricksons in April, Gray Fox and drakes in May, sulphurs into June, tricos in August.

Fishing the flats

The Willowemoc’s reputation is for demanding flat-water presentations: long leaders, downstream reach casts, and fly patterns one size smaller than you think. The pools below Livingston Manor hold trout that see hundreds of anglers a season. Nymphing the pocket water above town produces when the surface goes quiet, and streamers move the biggest browns after a summer thunderstorm bumps the flow.

Public fishing rights easements thread the creek from Livingston Manor down to Junction Pool with parking at multiple pulloffs; the Catskill Fly Fishing Center offers access and the sport’s best small museum. Upstream, the Willowemoc Wild Forest carries the headwater brook trout water for those willing to walk. Livingston Manor supplies flies, coffee and honest hatch reports.
