An Alcoa lake

Badin Lake covers 5,350 acres on the Yadkin River in the North Carolina Piedmont, built for aluminum smelting power in 1917 and now the clearest and deepest of the Yadkin chain. It holds a genuinely mixed fishery: striped bass and hybrids in the open water, largemouth and a strong spotted bass population on the rock, catfish that reach trophy size, plus crappie and white perch through the coves.

Spotted bass have taken over much of the rocky main-lake structure: drop-shots, Ned rigs and small jigs on the points and bluff transitions produce year-round. Largemouth hold in the brushier coves and around docks. The clearer water favors finesse presentations and low-light periods, with the upper end near the Yadkin inflow running stained and fishing better with moving baits.

Stripers and cats

Striped bass and hybrids school over the deeper main lake, chasing shad: down-lined live bait in summer, topwater and swimbaits when they push bait up in fall. Blue and flathead catfish grow large in the Yadkin chain, taking cut bait on the channel edges and flats: night fishing in summer produces the biggest fish. Crappie hold the brush at 10-20 feet through most of the year.

Ramps at Badin Lake Recreation Area (Uwharrie National Forest), Kings Mountain Point and several public access areas serve the lake, with campgrounds nearby in the national forest. The surrounding Uwharrie Mountains make it one of the prettier Piedmont lakes. Alcoa manages water levels for power generation, which fluctuates the lake modestly through the year.
