The urban giant

Norman is North Carolina's largest lake and its most fished: spotted bass have taken over the offshore brush and cane piles (electronics fishing at its most modern), hybrids and white perch blitz bait on summer mornings, and the dock-skipping largemouth game never stops. Winter warm-water discharges concentrate fish and anglers alike.

The spotted takeover

Spots arrived unofficially in the 2000s and now dominate: offshore brush, cane piles and rock at 15-35 ft, chased with drop shots and underspins behind forward-facing sonar. The largemouth still own the shallow docks: two games, one lake, pick by electronics budget.

Perch, birds and winter

White perch (another arrival) school by the acre: winter gulls over bait mark mixed feeds of perch, spots and hybrids: a slab dropped through converts all three. The warm-water discharges add January concentration points every local knows and few outsiders fish.
