Fishing Chatuge Lake: the full guide

A TVA highland lake

Chatuge floods 7,000 acres of the upper Hiwassee valley across the North Carolina-Georgia line, the prettiest and most developed of the TVA mountain lakes. Clear water, red-clay points and standing timber edges hold spotted bass, largemouth, white bass and a strong hybrid striped bass program, with smallmouth reappearing through Carolina stockings. It gets pontoon traffic in summer: the fish just move deeper and keep eating.

Hybrids and the open water game

The hybrid fishery drives the lake’s reputation: fish stack on main-lake humps and channel edges, best on downlined blueback herring at 20-40 feet in summer, or under diving birds on blustery fall days when they push shad to the surface: keep a spoon or fluke rigged. Winter drops them deep off the dam; spring runs them up the Hiwassee and Shooting Creek arms.

The bass ladder

Spotted bass own the rocky main-lake structure: drop-shots, Ned rigs and jerkbaits on the points and bluff transitions, 10-30 feet by season. Largemouth prefer the flatter coves, docks and what grass the lake allows. The winter jerkbait bite on wind-blown clay points is the sleeper pattern, and white bass run the river arm each April with the crowds still thin.

Two states, one lake

The state line crosses the water: North Carolina and Georgia honor each other’s licenses on most of Chatuge, but check the current reciprocal terms. Ramps ring the lake: Jackrabbit Mountain (USFS, with campground) and Ledford Chapel in NC, Towns County ramps around Hiawassee in Georgia. Winter drawdown of several feet stretches launches but exposes the structure worth mapping for spring.

Hybrids and spotted bass. The herring-fueled hybrid fishery is the main event: summer downlining and fall surface schools.

Do I need two licenses?

Usually no: the states maintain a reciprocal agreement for the main lake. Confirm the current fine print, especially in the river arms.

When is the lake quiet?

November through March: drawdown, empty ramps, and the jerkbait and hybrid fishing at its best.
