A gorge river

The Nantahala River flows through a gorge so steep in western North Carolina that the Cherokee name means land of the noonday sun: sunlight reaches the river only at midday. Below Nantahala Dam the powerhouse releases run cold year-round, supporting delayed-harvest and wild trout fisheries, while the upper river above the lake holds wild fish in smaller water.

Trout and the releases

The gorge section below the powerhouse is famous for whitewater, and the release schedule dictates fishing: the river runs low and wadeable when the powerhouse is off, then rises for rafting. Delayed-harvest regulations apply seasonally to a reach, providing excellent catch-and-release fishing in fall and spring before harvest opens.

The upper river

Above Nantahala Lake, the upper river and its tributaries hold wild rainbow and brown trout plus native brook trout in the headwaters, in small water reached from forest roads. It sees a fraction of the gorge traffic and offers genuine solitude in the Nantahala National Forest.

Macon County logistics

Access is via US 19 through the gorge, with the Nantahala Outdoor Center at its heart and forest roads reaching the upper river and Nantahala Lake. Franklin and Bryson City are the base towns.
