A lake in the Cascades

Detroit Lake covers about 3,500 acres on the North Santiam River in the Oregon Cascades, a Corps reservoir surrounded by forest with Mount Jefferson on the horizon. It is one of the state’s most heavily stocked trout waters, with rainbow trout planted through the season, plus kokanee, landlocked chinook and a smaller population of bull trout that is protected.

Trout and kokanee

Stocked rainbows are the mainstay, taken by trolling, still-fishing bait and casting from shore near the ramps and campgrounds. Kokanee school through summer and take small dodger-hoochie rigs at moderate depths: the fishery has strong years and lean ones depending on the cycle. Landlocked chinook add occasional larger fish.

Levels and the season

The reservoir is drawn down substantially each winter for flood control, leaving a fraction of its summer surface and closing ramps: the fishing season effectively runs spring through fall. The 2020 Beachie Creek Fire burned much of the surrounding forest, and the recovery is visible along the shoreline and the highway corridor.

Marion County logistics

Corps and state park ramps, campgrounds and day-use areas serve the lake, with Detroit village providing basic services on Highway 22. Salem is about an hour west. Summer weekends bring heavy recreational traffic including water skiing: fish early or in the shoulder seasons for quieter water.
