Rockfish (Pacific)

The Pacific reef's crowd: black, blue, vermilion and twenty cousins stacked on structure, biting like they mean it. Best: Apr-Oct open season. Best month across our waters: June.

A family, not a fish

'Rockfish' is a dynasty: black and blue rockfish schooling over the kelp, vermilion and copper holding the rockpiles, canary and yelloweye in the deep (often protected: know them on sight). They are the Pacific party-boat staple from Santa Barbara to Westport: limits measured in variety, dinners measured in fish tacos. Slow growth makes regulations strict: some species live past 50 years, and the rules protect the elders.

Structure is everything

Rockfish live on the hard stuff: reefs, pinnacles, kelp forests, jetty rock. The school stacks by species: blacks and blues suspended over the structure, quality reds and coppers tight to it. Drop swimbaits, shrimp flies or metal jigs; count the suspended fish down or grind the bottom fish up. When the school lifts on the meter, stop the drop early: the best action is often 20 ft off the rocks.

Barotrauma and the descender rule

Deep-caught rockfish inflate: releasing them at the surface is a death sentence, so descending devices are required gear on the Pacific coast (and the law in most states when releasing). Clip, drop, release at depth: survival rates jump to near-total. Know the protected species (yelloweye especially) cold: identification mistakes cost fisheries, not just fines.

Tackle setups

Party-boat standardHeavy 7-8 ft rod, 30-50 lb braid, double shrimp-fly dropper, 8-16 ozThe proven meat rig for schooled fish over structure
Light-tackle reefMedium spinning, 2-4 oz leadhead, 4-5 inch swimbaitMore sport, bigger average: the quality fish eat the single bait

Seasonal playbook

High summer (80F+)

Early boats beat the wind: drop swimbaits and shrimp flies to the reef tops at first light. Blacks and blues suspend: count down before the bottom grind.

Active season (65-80F)

Full season: work kelp edges and pinnacles with 2-4 oz leadheads and plastics. The bigger vermilions and coppers hold tight to the hard bottom below the school.

Transition (50-65F)

Fall's flat days produce the year's best quality: bigger baits, deeper structure, lings mixed in. Jetty and shore casters score blacks in the wash on swimbaits.

Winter (under 50F)

Season closures rule most zones (check dates): where open, deep-water releases demand descending devices. Plan the spring reopener instead.

Common questions

When is rockfish season on the Pacific coast?

Roughly April-October in California (varies by zone and depth), similar windows north: winter closures protect the stocks. Check current CDFW/ODFW/WDFW zone rules before every trip: depth limits shift within seasons.

Can you catch rockfish from shore?

Yes: black rockfish prowl jetties, kelp edges and rocky coves within casting range: swimbaits on 3/4-oz heads at dawn. Shore fish stay legal in some closed-boat months in certain states: verify locally.
