The salmon capital claim

Westport's harbor exists for the ocean salmon seasons: June-September (quota-ruled: check the dates yearly), the charter fleet runs the Grays Harbor bar at dawn to troll flashers for Chinook and the summer's coho waves. Limits by mid-morning are ordinary in good years: the town's rhythm: bar crossing, bite, cleaning tables by noon: has run for seventy years.

Jetty and surf

The South Jetty juts half a mile into the Pacific: black rockfish on swimbaits, lingcod in the holes, perch in the wash alongside. It is Washington's premier shore-fishing rock: watch the swell (sneaker waves are the real hazard) and fish the calm mornings. The beaches south run redtail surfperch year-round and razor-clam tides that mobilize entire counties (permit and season apply).

Beyond salmon

The fleet flips to bottom fish when salmon closes: lingcod and black rockfish limits on the nearshore reefs (spring opens strongest), albacore runs 30-60 miles out in late summer that convert salmon boats into tuna machines, and Dungeness crab pots soaking year-round in season. Grays Harbor behind the town adds sturgeon water and fall salmon staging inside the bar.
