Fertile and forgiving

Douglas drains the French Broad's fertile valley: stained, warm and stuffed with crappie (among the South's most consistent), largemouth that eat spinnerbaits like it is 1985, and winter drawdowns that concentrate everything into the channels. It is unpretentious, productive water: the anti-highland lake, twenty minutes from Gatlinburg.
