The Pisgah standard

The Davidson drains Pisgah National Forest past the fish hatchery whose outflow made one pool famous: North Carolina's most celebrated trout river, dense with fish (wild browns and rainbows above, hatchery-supported below) and technical enough that Trout Unlimited ranked it among America's top 100 with a warning label.

The hatchery stretch and the PhD fish

Below the Pisgah hatchery, the C&R fly-only water holds the river's fame: pods of large, endlessly-educated trout sipping midges in gin-clear glides: 6X, size-22s and humility: the fish inspect everything and refuse most. Upstream, the wild water (Avery Creek's junction and beyond) trades size for honesty: attractor dries in pocket water.

Seasons under the canopy
