The Hiwassee River flows from the North Carolina mountains through the Cherokee National Forest of southeastern Tennessee, with the reach below Apalachia Powerhouse managed as a coldwater tailwater. Rainbow and brown trout are stocked and hold in a river of ledges, shoals and pools running through forested gorge country.

Trout and generation

TVA generation at Apalachia governs the river: on low water it wades beautifully across broad shoals, fished with nymphs, dries and small streamers; when the powerhouse runs, the river rises quickly and becomes float water.
