The mountain trough

Watauga fills a Blue Ridge valley at 1,959 feet: Tennessee's highest big reservoir and its most alpine-feeling water: 100-plus-foot depths, forested shores inside Cherokee National Forest, and clarity that reads western. The two-story fishery runs trout below and black bass above: with lake trout (a Tennessee rarity) haunting the deepest basins.

Rainbows, browns and the odd laker hold the thermal bands: flat-line trolling at ice-out shorelines, downriggers at 30-60 ft by summer (spoons, small crankbaits), and night dock lights pulling fish shallow in the coves. Smallmouth on the slides

The rocky slides and points run a serious smallmouth program: Ned rigs and jerkbaits spring and fall, drop shots on the 20-35-ft ledges through summer, topwater at dawn wherever alewives flicker. Largemouth fill the few flat coves: but this is brown-fish water at heart.

Working the forest lake

Access rings through national forest: ramps at Watauga Point, Shook Branch, Rat Branch: and the Appalachian Trail literally crosses Watauga Dam: through-hikers watch trollers work the tailrace convergence.
