A cooling lake with saltwater fish

Victor Braunig Lake was built by CPS Energy in 1964 to cool a power plant and later opened for recreation. TPWD lists 1,350 surface acres (its survey report gives 1,298) and a maximum depth of 50 feet. Red drum, a saltwater species, are kept in the lake by stocking; TPWD's 2021 survey found they account for 80% of fishing effort, with abundance well above the historical average.

TPWD's lake page puts the best red drum fishing from March through August and notes that many fish over 20 pounds are harvested each year. Braunig has its own red drum rule: 3 fish a day, 20-inch minimum and no maximum length, so the coastal slot does not apply. Blue tilapia and gizzard and threadfin shad are the main prey, according to the survey.

Hybrids, catfish and bass

The lake page still rates hybrid striped bass excellent, but the 2021 survey found no directed fishing for them and recommended continuing a moratorium on hybrid stocking, so do not plan a trip around hybrids. Blue and channel catfish rate good (blue catfish were stocked in 2021, channel catfish fingerlings in 2020), and largemouth bass fair, best from January through April.

Getting on the water

Access is through Braunig Park, about 17 miles south of San Antonio off Interstate 37 at exit 130, operated by Thousand Trails Management Services. TPWD lists two paved ramps, courtesy docks, cleaning stations, live bait and RV sites; camping and day-use fees apply, and the receipt also admits you to Calaveras Lake. Gates open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. from March 15 to September 15 and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. the rest of the year.
