The southernmost trout tailwater

Below Canyon Dam, the Guadalupe runs cold enough year-round to hold trout: the southernmost sustained trout fishery in the United States. GRTU's lease-access program and state stockings fill the tailwater with rainbows (and browns that holdover to surprising size): a fly-fishing culture thrives forty-five minutes from San Antonio.

Working the tailwater

The trout water runs roughly 10 miles below the dam: nymph the riffle seams (eggs, midges, the Guadalupe's beloved wooly buggers), swing soft hackles through the tails, and watch flows religiously: releases swing the river from wadeable to dangerous fast (our Sattler gauge is the day's first check). Winter through spring fishes best: summer's tuber flotillas own middays: dawn remains the angler's.

GRTU and access

Trout Unlimited's Guadalupe chapter (the nation's largest) leases private banks for members: the public accesses (Guadalupe Park below the dam, road crossings) hold their own water. The lease program funds the fishery's advocacy: flow agreements that keep Canyon's releases trout-cold: Texas conservation at its most practical.

The native upstream

Above Canyon Lake, the Guadalupe returns to its Texas self: cypress-lined runs where Guadalupe bass (the state fish: a stream-adapted spotted cousin) crush topwaters and crawfish patterns. Kayak floats from Rebecca Creek down fish the Hill Country classic: two rivers, one name, both worth the drive.
