Texas fishing license with freshwater endorsement. Trout Zone 1 (800 yards below Canyon Dam release to the east Hwy 306 bridge): 12-18 in. protected slot, 5 a day, one 18 in. or longer. Trout Zone 2 (Hwy 306 bridge to the second River Road crossing): 18-in. minimum, 1 a day. Trout kept in both zones must be taken on artificial lures without bait or scent. Elsewhere: 5 trout a day, no minimum (TPWD, valid Sept. 1, 2026-Aug. 31, 2027).

Winter trout below the dam

TPWD's 2025-2026 trout stocking schedule lists the Canyon Tailrace of the Guadalupe River at New Braunfels for 18,471 trout spread over ten dates from December 5, 2025 to February 26, 2026. Above Canyon Lake, Guadalupe River State Park received 1,500 trout on January 4, 2026.

Two special trout zones

Zone 1 runs from 800 yards below the Canyon Dam release down to the east bridge on Highway 306: a 12-18 inch protected slot, 5 trout a day with only one 18 inches or longer. Zone 2 runs from that bridge down to the second crossing on River Road: an 18-inch minimum and one trout a day. In both zones trout may be kept only when caught on artificial lures, and the lures may carry no bait, organic material or scent; hair and feathers are allowed.

The native bass

TPWD names the Guadalupe bass the official state fish of Texas; it is found only in Texas, in streams of the northern and eastern Edwards Plateau, including the Guadalupe River above Gonzales. It has no minimum length under statewide rules, within the 5-fish black bass limit.
