Today brings clear skies, wind SSE around 11 mph, rising pressure near 1011 hPa and a high of 96. Water sits around 84 F for the season (estimated). The plan, species by species

Hybrid striped bassGood

Schooling at first light over main-lake humps and channel edges. Slabs, tail spinners and live shad once you mark bait. It is usually over by mid-morning.

Catfish (blue, channel)Good

Anchor on 20-30 ft baited holes with punch bait or cut shad. They keep biting through the heat when everything else quits.

Largemouth bassFair

Topwater at first light on points and seawalls, then slide out to 12-25 ft brush and points with a Carolina rig, deep crank or drop shot. The bite is dawn, dusk or deep.

CrappieSlow

Straight down on bridge pilings and deep brush at 15-25 ft. Minnows outfish jigs in hot water; move until the graph shows them stacked.

Tomorrow: Similar at 97 F. The solunar majors shift about 50 minutes later.Next report: Sat, Sep 5, 6:30 AMHow this report is made →

Largemouth bass illustration

Largemouth bass

Best: spring and fall

The headline act on most American reservoirs. Relates to cover: docks, brush, grass edges and points. Topwater at first light on points and seawalls, then slide out to 12-25 ft brush and points with a Carolina rig, deep crank or drop shot. The bite is dawn, dusk or deep.

Hybrid striped bass illustration

Hybrid striped bass

Best: Jun-Sep

Stocked white bass x striper cross. Open-water shad chasers; birds and busting bait give them away. Schooling at first light over main-lake humps and channel edges. Slabs, tail spinners and live shad once you mark bait. It is usually over by mid-morning.

Catfish (blue, channel) illustration

Catfish (blue, channel)

Good year-round

The most reliable bite on most southern waters. Blues run big; channels fill the cooler. Anchor on 20-30 ft baited holes with punch bait or cut shad. They keep biting through the heat when everything else quits.

Crappie illustration

Crappie

Best: Nov-Mar

Brush piles, bridge pilings and standing timber. The fish fry favorite. Straight down on bridge pilings and deep brush at 15-25 ft. Minnows outfish jigs in hot water; move until the graph shows them stacked.

Fishing Lake Lavon: the full guide

The commuter lake that produces

Lavon serves the metroplex without ceremony: hybrid stripers school October through March under working gulls, the 78 bridge and Ticky Creek hold crappie year-round, and rising water floods enough brush to make largemouth real. Not glamorous: dependable, close and better than its fame.

Where the fish actually hold

Lavon fishes structure-poor at first glance: the skill is in its subtleties: riprap at the dam and bridges, the submerged roadbeds, timber lines in Ticky and Clear creeks, and the main-lake humps that hybrid schools ambush. Falling winter levels expose the skeleton: photograph it for the year's waypoints.

The urban-lake rhythm

Being the metroplex's northeast tank means pressure: beat it by clock and season. Weekday dawns own the hybrid bite; night crappie fishing under bridge lights out-produces daylight summer trips; and the north end's timber sees a tenth of the south's traffic.

The metro sand-bass commute

Lavon serves northeast Dallas the region's easiest limits: sand bass schooling on the main-lake points and humps from June through the fall bird season, crappie on the bridge pilings and brush, and blue cats for the bank crowd at every park. It fishes best as a weekday-evening lake: launch at five, follow the birds, home by dark with dinner.

Common questions

Why does Lavon's level swing so much?

It is a working water-supply lake: drought draws it down hard, wet springs refill fast. The fishing follows: rising water floods brush (flip it), falling water concentrates fish on the skeleton structure.

Where do the hybrids school in winter?

Follow the birds working the main-lake humps and the dam basin: December-February gulls mark the shad balls, and a slab dropped under them rarely waits long.
