Castle Rock spreads the Wisconsin River across 13,000 stained, stumpy acres: a working flowage where current never fully sleeps. The fishery runs river rules: walleye on the flooded wood and current seams, white bass chasing shad in open water, channel and flathead cats on the old riverbed: reliable central-Wisconsin fishing without northern-lake pretense.

Walleye in the wood

The flooded timber and cribs hold the program: jig-and-minnow at ice-out along the river channel, leeches on the wood edges in June, crawler harnesses trolled over the flats' scattered stumps all summer. The dam areas (Castle Rock and the Petenwell inflow) concentrate fish when gates run: current is the dinner bell here as everywhere.

White bass riots and cat country

June's white bass runs stack fish below Petenwell dam and along wind-blown shores: silver spoons in the melee: the family-action staple. After dark the flowage turns cat water: flatheads to 40 pounds from the riverbed holes on live bait, channels everywhere on cut offerings: a discreetly serious nighttime fishery.
