The people's system

Winnebago is 132,000 shallow acres tied to the Wolf and Fox rivers: a walleye system where the spring river run is a statewide event, summer trolling covers the basin, and perch fill the fry pans. In February, the lake hosts sturgeon spearing: cutting holes to spear fish that outweigh anglers: a tradition found nowhere else on Earth.

System walleye, explained

Winnebago's walleye belong to a system: spawn runs up the Wolf and Fox (April's famous bank fishery), summer dispersal across the big lake's reefs and mud, fall regrouping. Trollers pull flicker shads over the basin; jiggers work Garlic Island and the reefs: one population, three fisheries.

The sturgeon spectacle

February's spearing season is globally unique: shanties over holes, hand-carved decoys, 100-lb lake sturgeon taken through the ice under a quota system that made the population thrive. Registration stations become village festivals: Wisconsin heritage, alive.
