The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The reach
The Abercrombie is the river that runs out of the granite country south of Oberon and Bathurst through gorges and river flats to meet the Lachlan in Wyangala Dam, with the Abercrombie crossing on the Goulburn road, the Abercrombie River National Park and its camps, and long reaches of rock pools, rapids and timber that few people fish. It is cod and perch water of the tableland kind, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the crossing supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the rock pools, the snags and the deep bends through summer and autumn on lures and bait, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; golden perch fish the same water from spring to autumn; trout hold in the cold upper reaches and the tributaries in the cool months; redfin are in the pools; and carp are present under the DPIRD rules. Where to fish it
The crossing gives bank access to the pools either side of the bridge, the national park camps at the Sink and Silent Creek give the gorge reaches on foot, and a kayak covers the pools between the rapids when the river is up; the rock pools and the timber are the cod water. The road in is gravel and steep.
Reading the report
The chart is the unregulated river: it rises after rain on the tablelands and falls back to its pools in a dry spell, and a rise brings the perch on while a low, clear river makes the cod wary. The water temperature estimate, labelled as one, runs cool on the tablelands and gives the cod band from November to March; the gorges shelter the water; pressure counts before a summer storm.
