The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The Lachlan at Nanami
Nanami is a gauging site on the Lachlan River in the farming country east of Forbes, on the stretch of river that runs from Cowra down through Gooloogong toward Forbes between river red gums and cropping paddocks, fed by releases from Wyangala Dam. Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of this reach of the Lachlan, cod on the snags and in the deep holes on lures and bait, yellowbelly in the warm months on shrimp and worms; redfin and carp are common. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The river crossings and travelling stock reserves between Gooloogong and Forbes give bank access to the Lachlan, and a kayak covers the snag-lined reaches between them. Much of the river frontage is private farmland, so stay on public land.
Planning a visit
Forbes and Cowra, on either side of this reach, have tackle, supplies and accommodation, and the river is a short drive from both. Bring cod lures and bait, and check the Wyangala release before the trip.
The river through the year
Releases from Wyangala Dam keep the Lachlan at Nanami running through the irrigation season, and floods come from heavy rain on the slopes around Cowra. Cod feed through summer and autumn in the snags, and the winter is slow.
