The reach
The Lachlan at Cowra is the river below Wyangala Dam as it reaches the central west town of the Japanese garden and the prisoner-of-war camp, running between willows and red gums under the town bridge with river parks, a caravan park and a swimming reach, and the valley’s farmland either side. It is cod and perch water with the dam’s releases in it, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Cowra supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the snags, the bridge and the deep bends through summer and autumn on lures and bait, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule the species card computes; golden perch are the everyday fish from spring to autumn; silver perch are protected; and carp and redfin are present, the carp under the DPIRD rules. Trout drop down from the Wyangala releases in the cool months and are taken below the dam.
Where to fish it
The river parks and the bridge give bank access in town, the caravan park reach fishes at dusk, and a kayak launched at the parks covers the bends upstream and down; the reach below the Wyangala wall, reached from the dam road, is the cold-water spot where trout and cod meet.
