The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

Fishing Wyangala Dam: the full guide
The lake
Wyangala Dam is the storage on the Lachlan River south-east of Cowra in the central west of New South Wales, where the Lachlan and the Abercrombie meet, a long, deep lake of rocky points, timbered arms and grazing country with the Wyangala Waters and Grabine Lakeside holiday parks, their ramps and their camping on its shores. It is a golden perch and Murray cod lake with redfin, silver perch and catfish, and a level that rises through winter and spring and draws down hard through summer for the irrigators downstream. The level in the report is the Bureau of Meteorology’s reading at the Wyangala gauge, with the time it was taken.
Species and seasons
Golden perch are the lake’s fish, on the points, the timber and the drop-offs from spring to autumn, trolled, cast and on bait; Murray cod fish the timber and the rock walls in the warmer months, with the closed season from September to November that DPIRD publishes; silver perch are stocked and may be kept under the stocked impoundment rules; eel-tailed catfish feed on the bottom in summer; and redfin school in the bays and are the winter fish, with the Abercrombie arm the classic redfin water. Carp are present, with the DPIRD rules on their release, and trout are stocked in the Abercrombie arm in some years.
