The Barwon at Collarenebri
Collarenebri is the small north-western town on the Barwon River between Mungindi and Walgett, on the cotton and grazing plains where the river winds under coolibah, with the town’s river reserve and camping ground on the bank. Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Barwon at Collarenebri: cod in the snags and the deep holes on lures and bait, yellowbelly on shrimp and worms through the warm months; freshwater catfish are protected west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The river reserve and camping ground at Collarenebri give bank access to the Barwon, and the stock routes and crossings reach the reaches beyond the town. The high clay banks call for care after rain.

Collarenebri is on the Gwydir Highway west of Moree, with a pub, a store and riverside camping. Bring cod gear and bait for yellowbelly, and check the roads, which can close after rain.
The river through the year
At Collarenebri the Barwon carries flows from Queensland and the Border Rivers that can arrive weeks after the rain that caused them; in drought it slows to a chain of pools between the clay banks.
