Best: November to April

The Mehi at Moree
The Mehi River is the anabranch of the Gwydir that runs through Moree on the north-western plains of New South Wales, a narrow, tree-lined river through the town parks and out across the cotton country. Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Mehi at Moree: cod in the snags and the deeper holes on lures and bait, yellowbelly on shrimp and worms through the warm months; carp are abundant and freshwater catfish are protected west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The riverside parks through Moree give easy bank access to the Mehi, and the weir pools and the reaches out of town hold fish through dry spells. It is a narrow river, fished from the bank with light gear. The weir pools and the snag-lined bends in the town parks hold both species, and the reaches out past the town suit a kayak on a still morning; yellowbelly take shrimp fished close to the timber.
