The Moonie at Fenton
Fenton is a gauging site on the Moonie River upstream of Nindigully, in the remote grazing and cropping country of the southern Maranoa, where the river is a chain of long waterholes under coolibah. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Fenton supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Moonie at Nindigully has its own page.
Species and seasons
Golden perch and Murray cod are the fish of the upper Moonie, yellowbelly on shrimp and worms in the waterholes, cod in the deeper holes. Queensland’s Murray cod closed season, 1 August to 31 October, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
Access is from the public road crossings; the land along the river is station country, so stay on public access.

The river through the year
The Moonie is one of the smaller rivers of the Queensland Murray-Darling, rising west of the Darling Downs and running south-west through brigalow and cypress country to the Barwon below the New South Wales border. At Fenton it is a chain of waterholes for much of the year, set running only when summer storms or a wet season in the upper catchment send a flow down, and the fish concentrate in the deeper holes when it is low. Golden perch bite best when a flow arrives in the warm months and the water starts to rise; cod stay in the timber of the bigger holes and are off limits during the Queensland closure from 1 August to 31 October. In a long dry the holes shrink, warm and clear, and the early mornings and evenings are the times to fish.
