The Moonie at Nindigully
Nindigully is the tiny settlement on the Moonie River south-east of St George, known for the Nindigully Pub, among the oldest licensed hotels in Queensland, which stands beside the river and its riverside camping. The river winds between coolibah and red gums toward the New South Wales border. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Nindigully supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Species and seasons
Golden perch and Murray cod are the fish of the Moonie at Nindigully, yellowbelly on shrimp and worms, cod in the snags and the deeper holes. Queensland’s Murray cod closed season, 1 August to 31 October in its Murray-Darling waters, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The riverbank camping beside the pub gives access to the Moonie, and the waterholes up and downstream are fished from the bank.

Nindigully is off the Carnarvon Highway between St George and Mungindi, with the pub and camping. Carry water and fuel, and check the roads after rain.
The river through the year
The Moonie at Nindigully is a small western river of long waterholes that runs only when summer storms or a wet season in the upper catchment set it flowing, then drops back into its holes. The riverside camping beside the pub means many visitors fish the hole in front of it, and the waterholes up and downstream give quieter water to anyone who walks. Golden perch bite best on a rising river in the warm months; Murray cod keep to the timber in the bigger holes and are off limits during the Queensland closure from 1 August to 31 October. In the summer heat the bite is early and late, and in winter the nights are cold and the fishing slows. Below Nindigully the river continues south-west toward the Barwon.
