The reach
The Gwydir at Bundarra is the river above Copeton Dam in the granite country of the northern tablelands, running through the village between Armidale and Inverell over gravel bars and rock pools with a river park, a bridge and long reaches into the grazing country either way. It is cod and perch water of the upper kind, cool and clear, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Bundarra supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the rock pools, the snags and the deep bends through summer and autumn on lures and bait, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; golden perch fish the same water from spring to autumn; eel-tailed catfish feed in summer; silver perch and the protected natives go back; and carp are present under the DPIRD rules. The river runs into Copeton, which has its own page.
Where to fish it
The river park and the bridge at the village give bank access to the pools, the gravel bars upstream are wading water when the river is low, and a kayak covers the reach into the granite gorges downstream toward the dam; the rock pools and the timber are the cod water. Crossings on the back roads give access to the upper river.

The chart is the unregulated upper river: it rises after rain on the tablelands and falls back to its pools in a dry spell, and a rise brings the perch on while a low, clear river makes the cod wary.
