The Gwydir at Gravesend
Gravesend is the village on the Gwydir Highway where it crosses the Gwydir River between Warialda and Moree, on the reach where the river comes down from the slopes below Copeton Dam toward the plains, with rocky runs and red gum pools. Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of this reach, the cod in the pools below the rocky runs and in the snags, the yellowbelly in the warm months on shrimp and worms. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The highway crossing at Gravesend and the reserves near it give access to the Gwydir, and the rocky reaches are fished from the bank with lures in the pools. Private land lines much of the river.
