Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The Lachlan at Condobolin
Condobolin is the central-west town on the Lachlan River between Forbes and Lake Cargelligo, where the river runs slow and brown between river red gums across the plains. Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Lachlan at Condobolin: cod in the log jams and the deep bends, on lures and bait; yellowbelly on shrimp and worms in the warm months; carp are common. Freshwater catfish are protected in rivers west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The riverside reserves and the camping spots along the Lachlan near Condobolin give bank access to the snags, and a kayak or a small boat covers the reaches between the crossings. The weir pools up and downstream hold water in dry times. The fallen red gums on the outside bends hold the cod, and the slower water between them is where yellowbelly take shrimp and worms in summer.

Condobolin is on the Lachlan Valley Way between Forbes and Lake Cargelligo, with a caravan park, supplies and riverside reserves. Bring cod lures, bait for yellowbelly and a kayak for the reaches between the snags; spring is closed for cod, so plan cod trips from December to August.
