The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The reach
The Murray at Corowa runs between the Hume releases upstream and the backwaters of Lake Mulwala below, a wide, sandy, red-gum river with Corowa on the New South Wales bank, Wahgunyah and Rutherglen across the water, the John Foord Bridge, river parks and caravan parks on both sides and long reaches of snags and bends either way. It is classic Murray cod water, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Corowa supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are the reason people fish here, along the snags, the undercut banks and the deep bends through summer and autumn, on lures cast to the timber, surface lures at night and bait, and closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; golden perch are the everyday fish from spring to autumn; silver perch are protected in the river and go back; and carp are numerous under the DPIRD rules. The Victorian bank carries the same cod dates under the VFA rule.
Where to fish it
The river parks either side of the John Foord Bridge and the caravan parks give bank access to the deep water at the bends, and the ramps at Corowa and Wahgunyah put a boat onto reaches of snags that run for kilometres in both directions; the sandbars on the inside of the bends are the summer camping and the deep outside bends are the cod water. Night fishing with surface lures along the snags is the summer method.
Reading the report
The chart follows the Hume releases with a day’s delay, and a steady summer release keeps the river high and the cod in the slack water behind the timber; a fall in autumn drops the river onto its sandbars and concentrates the fish in the bends.
