The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The reach
The Murray at Albury is the river as it leaves Lake Hume, cold, clear and regulated, running between Albury on the New South Wales bank and Wodonga on the Victorian one through parks, red gums and sand bars, with Noreuil Park, the Hovell Tree and a dozen access points along the town reach and the Hume Weir a few kilometres upstream. It is the first town reach of the Murray and a cod water of note, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Albury supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are the fish, in the snags, the rock and the deep bends of the town reach through summer and autumn on big lures, surface lures at night and bait, and closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; golden perch fish the same water from spring to autumn; trout drop down from the weir in the cold releases and are taken below the dam in winter; and redfin and carp are present, the carp under the DPIRD rules. The Victorian bank follows Victoria’s rule, which has the same dates.
Where to fish it
Noreuil Park and the town parks give bank access to the deep bends and the snags along the Albury side, the Wodonga bank gives the other side of the same water, and the reach below the Hume Weir wall, reached from the weir road, is the cold-water spot where the trout and the cod meet. A kayak launched at the town parks covers the reach in an evening; the sand bars are shallow enough to wade in a low release.
Reading the report
The level chart is the release from Hume: a rise means the dam is letting water down for the irrigators and the river runs high, cold and fast, which pushes the cod into the slack water behind the snags; a fall settles the river and brings them out. The water temperature estimate, labelled as one, runs colder here than the estimate for an inland river because of the dam release, and the page says so. Pressure counts on the summer evenings.
