The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

Fishing Lake Hume: the full guide
The lake
Lake Hume is the storage on the Murray River above Albury and Wodonga, on the border of New South Wales and Victoria, a large reservoir of flooded valley with standing timber in its arms, the Mitta Mitta and the Murray running into it and the dam wall at its western end near Albury. Bowna, Bethanga, Talgarno, Tallangatta and the Hume Weir village are the names anglers use, and the lake fishes from the bank, from small boats and from kayaks along a shoreline that changes with the level, which rises through winter and spring and draws down hard through summer for irrigation. This page reads the storage level and volume from the Bureau of Meteorology’s Water Data Online, with the date and time of the reading.
Species by season
Murray cod are the lake’s prize, in the timber and along the rock walls in the warmer months on big lures and bait, with the closed season from September to November on both sides of the border that the state agencies publish and this site links; golden perch fish the points, the timber and the drop-offs from spring to autumn; redfin school in the bays and are the winter fish; and brown and rainbow trout hold in the cold water and the Mitta arm, taken trolling and from the bank in the cooler months. Carp are present, with rules on their release.
