The Murray at Cobram
Cobram is the Victorian town on the Murray facing Barooga in New South Wales, between Yarrawonga and Tocumwal, where the river winds through red gum forest and sandy beaches that fill with campers in summer. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Cobram supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Lake Mulwala upstream and the Murray at Tocumwal downstream have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are the prize of the Murray at Cobram, in the red gum snags and the deep bends, with golden perch in the warm months. This reach, between Yarrawonga Weir and the Tocumwal road bridge, protects the breeding trout cod: all fishing is prohibited here from September to November, which covers the Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November; trout cod must always be released. Where to fish it
The beaches and the riverside reserves at Cobram and Barooga give bank access, and the ramps put a boat onto the river. Outside the spring closure, the snag-lined bends through the forest are the cod water.
