The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.

Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The Murray at Jingellic
Jingellic is the small river settlement on the upper Murray upstream of Lake Hume, where the river runs clear and quick between green hills and river flats on the New South Wales and Victorian border, with a riverside reserve and a pub at the crossing. Species and seasons
Murray cod are the prize of the upper Murray at Jingellic, in the snags and the deep bends; trout are also caught in the colder, faster water, and golden perch move up in the warm months. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The riverside reserve and the camping spots at Jingellic give access to the Murray, and the reaches upstream toward Towong and downstream toward Hume are reached from the crossings. A kayak or a canoe drifts the river between them. The deep outside bends and the snags upstream of the crossing hold the cod, and the faster runs at the head of the pools are where the trout feed in the colder months.
Planning a visit
Jingellic is on the River Road between Albury and Khancoban, with a pub and a riverside reserve for camping. Bring cod lures, trout gear for the colder water and a canoe for drifting the upper Murray; cod are closed in spring, as elsewhere on the river.
