The reach
The Murray at Tocumwal runs below the Yarrawonga Weir through the red gum forests of the Murray Valley, a wide, sandy river with the town beach, the Tocumwal bridge, caravan parks and the forest tracks that lead to a hundred river camps between Tocumwal and Barmah. It is cod and perch water in the heart of the river’s tourist stretch, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Tocumwal supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the snags, the undercut banks and the deep bends through summer and autumn on lures and bait, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule the species card computes; golden perch fish the same water from spring to autumn; silver perch are protected and go back; and carp are numerous, with the DPIRD release rules. The Victorian bank, in the Barmah forest, follows the VFA rule with the same dates.
Where to fish it
The town beach and the parks give bank access at Tocumwal, the ramp puts a boat onto reaches of snags upstream and down, and the forest tracks on the New South Wales side lead to river camps where the bank fishing is the point of the trip; the deep outside bends and the timber are the cod water, the sand flats the summer camps. A boat and a plan for the snags cover the river between the towns.
