The Towamba at Towamba
Towamba is the small village on the Towamba River inland from Eden on the far south coast, where the river runs clear through cattle country and forest toward the sea at Kiah and Twofold Bay. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Towamba supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Eden has its own page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fish of the fresh Towamba, taken on small surface lures and spinners in the pools and under the overhanging banks from spring to autumn; the lower river toward Kiah is tidal and holds bream and estuary perch. The New South Wales river closure for bass and estuary perch, 1 May to 31 August, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossing at Towamba and the reserves along the valley road give access to the pools, and a kayak covers the longer reaches.

The river through the year
The Towamba is a river of the far south coast, and its rain comes in bursts: dry spells when the river runs low and clear between pools, and east coast lows that bring floods down to Kiah and Twofold Bay. The bass that live in the fresh river move down to the estuary in winter to spawn, and the New South Wales closure from 1 May to 31 August covers that time; in spring they return upstream, and from late spring they feed in the pools and under the banks, most readily on the surface at dusk. The river around Towamba is quiet cattle and forest country, and the best fishing is a slow walk between pools with small lures.
