The Balonne at Warroo
Warroo is a gauging site on the Balonne River between Surat and St George, in the grazing and cropping country of the Maranoa and Balonne, where the river winds between red gums and coolibah. Species and seasons
Golden perch and Murray cod are the fish of this reach of the Balonne, the yellowbelly on shrimp and worms, the cod in the snags and deep holes. Queensland’s Murray cod closed season, 1 August to 31 October in its Murray-Darling waters, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
Access to the river around Warroo is from public road crossings and stock routes; much of the frontage is station land.

The river through the year
At Warroo the Balonne runs through flat country between Surat and St George, a river of long waterholes under red gums and coolibah joined by shallow runs when it is low. Its flows come mainly from rain in the Condamine catchment far upstream and take days to arrive, so a rise on the chart here can follow a dry week at Warroo itself. Golden perch feed on the rising water in the warm months, which is the main season; Murray cod keep to the timber and the deeper bends, and the Queensland closure from 1 August to 31 October keeps them off limits from late winter into spring. After a big flow the river can stay high and dirty for weeks, and the fishing settles as it clears and drops back into its holes.
