The Balonne at Weribone
Weribone is a gauging site on the Balonne River upstream of St George, in the flat grazing country where the river winds between river red gums toward the town and its weir. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Weribone supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Balonne at St George has its own page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Balonne above St George, cod in the snags, yellowbelly on shrimp and worms. Queensland’s Murray cod closed season, 1 August to 31 October, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The road crossings and reserves along the Balonne give access; much of the river is bounded by station land, so stay on public access.

St George, downstream, has supplies, tackle and accommodation. Bring cod lures and bait.
The river through the year
Between Surat and St George the Balonne is a river of long waterholes joined by shallow runs when it is low, and a broad brown flow when rain on the Condamine catchment and the Darling Downs comes through, days after it fell. At Weribone the water is usually coloured and the banks are high, and the fish hold where the channel deepens on the outside of the bends and around fallen timber. Golden perch move and feed on a rising river in the warm months, which is when most are caught here; cod are more settled, keeping to the same snags, and the Queensland Murray-Darling closure from 1 August to 31 October takes them off the list from late winter into spring. Downstream, the Balonne runs into the weir pool above St George, a different kind of water from this open river reach.
