The lake
Lake Samsonvale is the North Pine Dam on the North Pine River at Petrie, on the northern edge of Brisbane, a Seqwater supply lake in the suburbs with limited access: shore fishing from designated areas and boat fishing under a permit scheme run by the local stocking association, electric motors only, on a lake that is otherwise closed to the public. It is bass water within sight of the city, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are stocked in numbers and school in the deep water off the points in winter and spread along the edges and the weed in summer; golden perch are stocked and fish the points and the timber from spring to autumn; Mary River cod are stocked and protected; saratoga and silver perch are present; and red claw are a pot fishery where allowed. The stocking association publishes its releases and runs the boat permit.
Where to fish it
The designated shore areas at Forgan Cove and the Bullocky Rest end of the lake are the bank access, and the boat fishery runs under the association’s permit with electric motors only from the ramp it controls; the timbered arms and the points off the old river channel are the bass water.
