The Severn at Ballandean
Ballandean is the Granite Belt village south of Stanthorpe on the Severn River, where the river runs through granite boulders and pools among the vineyards and orchards of Queensland’s highest farming country, toward Girraween and the border. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Ballandean supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are the fish of the Severn’s granite pools, taken on lures and bait, with golden perch in the warmer months. Queensland’s Murray cod closed season, 1 August to 31 October in its Murray-Darling waters, applies; the species card computes it. Trout cod and other threatened natives of the Border Rivers are protected.
Where to fish it
The crossings and reserves around Ballandean and down toward the border give access to the pools, and the river is walked between them over the granite.
Planning a visit
Stanthorpe, to the north, has supplies and accommodation, and the Granite Belt wineries are nearby. The Granite Belt is cold in winter; bring warm clothes.
The river through the year
The Severn rises in the Granite Belt and runs south and west past Ballandean and Girraween toward the Dumaresq and the border rivers, part of the Murray-Darling. At Ballandean it is granite-country water: clear pools among boulders, joined by runs that shrink in a dry year, and it rises quickly after heavy rain on the tableland. The Granite Belt is high country, and the water is cool for much of the year, which shortens the season for cod, most active from late spring through summer and autumn; the Queensland closure from 1 August to 31 October keeps them off limits from late winter into spring. Golden perch and redfin also live in the river. The winters here are frosty, and the fish slow right down; summer evenings are the best time on the pools.
