The lake
Glenlyon Dam holds Pike Creek on the Queensland side of the border west of Stanthorpe and near Texas, a deep, timbered storage built for the Border Rivers scheme and shared by the two states, with a tourist park, camping, a ramp and steep, forested shores. It is cod water of reputation, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are the drawcard, along the timber, the rock and the points in the warm months, and Glenlyon is on the Queensland Government’s list of dams exempt from the Murray-Darling cod closure of 1 August to 31 October; golden perch are stocked and fish the same structure from spring to autumn; silver perch and eel-tailed catfish are present; and red claw are a pot fishery. The stocking group publishes its releases. The New South Wales rules apply on the southern shore, where the closure runs September to November.
Where to fish it
The tourist park and the ramp at the wall are the access, and the timbered arms and the rocky points along the steep shores are the cod water, a boat fishery in a deep lake; the deep water off the wall holds the fish in a low year. Bank fishing from the park foreshore works at dusk, and the border runs through the lake, so the shore you fish from decides which state’s rules apply.
