The Warrego at Augathella
Augathella is the small outback town on the upper Warrego River north of Charleville, where the river is a chain of waterholes and sandy channels under coolibah and river red gums that runs after rain. Species and seasons
Golden perch are the fish most anglers catch in the upper Warrego, on shrimp and worms in the waterholes, with Murray cod in the deeper holes. Queensland’s Murray cod closed season, 1 August to 31 October in its Murray-Darling waters, applies; the species card computes it.

The waterholes near the town and the crossings along the Warrego give access; the river is fished from the bank.

The river through the year
The Warrego rises in the ranges north of Augathella and runs south through Charleville and Cunnamulla toward the Darling, part of the Murray-Darling system at its northern edge. At Augathella it is often a series of waterholes and dry sand, and it runs only after good rain in the ranges, sometimes briefly and sometimes for weeks; the chart shows whether it is flowing. Golden perch are the main fish, and they feed hard on the first flows of the warm season; spangled perch are common in the holes. When it is not running, the fish are confined to the permanent waterholes, and the heat of the outback summer makes the early mornings and evenings the times to fish.
