The Warrego at Cunnamulla
Cunnamulla is the outback town on the Warrego River in south-west Queensland, where the Allan Tannock Weir holds a pool and the river winds between coolibah and river red gums south toward the New South Wales border. Species and seasons
Golden perch are the fish of the Warrego at Cunnamulla, on shrimp and worms in the weir pool and the waterholes, with Murray cod in the deeper holes. Queensland’s Murray cod closed season, 1 August to 31 October in its Murray-Darling waters, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The weir pool and the riverside reserves in Cunnamulla give bank access, and the waterholes downstream are reached from the roads south of the town.

The river through the year
The Warrego at Cunnamulla is the lower reach of a river that rises in the ranges far to the north and runs south past Charleville toward the Darling. Most of the year the Allan Tannock Weir holds a steady pool through the town and the river below it is a string of waterholes; after good rain upstream a flow arrives, days later, and the river rises and runs. Golden perch feed on those rises in the warm months, the best fishing of the year; Murray cod hold in the weir pool and the deeper holes and are off limits during the Queensland closure from 1 August to 31 October. In the heat of summer the bite is early and late, and in a long dry the waterholes below the weir shrink and the fish concentrate in them.
