The Shannon at Hermitage
The Shannon River runs south from Great Lake and Shannon Lagoon at Miena across the Central Plateau toward the Ouse, a small highland river of runs and pools through button grass and marsh; Hermitage is a gauging site on its course. Species and seasons
Brown trout are the fish of the Shannon, rising to hatches in the warm months and taken on the fly, lures and bait. The Shannon River is not listed separately in the Inland Fishing Code, so the general river rules apply: open from the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card, with a bag of five fish over 220 mm.
Where to fish it
The Highland Lakes Road and the tracks off it give access to the river; it is open country walked between the pools.
Planning a visit
Miena, at Great Lake, has a hotel, a store and accommodation. The plateau is cold and windy; carry warm, waterproof clothing in any month.
The river through the year
In the middle of the last century the Shannon was famous for the “Shannon Rise”, a mayfly hatch that drew anglers from across Australia; hydro works on Great Lake changed the river. The trout still rise to hatches in the warm months, and the highland summer evenings are the best time. Today the river runs through button grass and marsh below the lagoon, and its flow depends partly on what the hydro system lets through from Shannon Lagoon. The highland weather can turn cold in any month, and warm clothing is essential.
