The lake
Lake Gordon is the Hydro Tasmania storage behind the Gordon Dam at Strathgordon, the largest by volume in the state, a deep lake of drowned forest and steep, wild shores that joins Lake Pedder through McPartlans Canal and runs north into the wilderness, with a ramp near the dam and the Strathgordon village the only base. It is a big-water trout fishery for those who know it, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the intake supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are wild and fish the drowned forest, the steep shores and the creek mouths on lures and flies, with the fish spread thin over a huge lake; rainbow trout are wild and fish the drop-offs; and the lake follows the brown trout season the Inland Fisheries Service publishes, first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card. McPartlans Canal between the lakes is closed water, as the code lists.
Where to fish it
The ramp near the dam launches onto the southern end, and the fishing is a boat fishery into the drowned forest and up the arms, trolling the drop-offs and casting to the creek mouths; there is little bank access on the steep shores. The lake is vast and the drowned timber makes navigation a daylight matter; fuel and a plan for the weather are part of the trip.
