Lake Rosebery
Lake Rosebery is the storage of the Pieman hydro scheme between Tullah and the mining town of Rosebery on Tasmania’s West Coast, a lake of drowned timber and forested hills below Lake Mackintosh, crossed by the Murchison Highway. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page. Lake Mackintosh, upstream, has its own page.
Species and seasons
Wild brown trout are the fish of Lake Rosebery, holding along the timbered edges and the creek mouths, taken on lures, the fly and bait. Like Mackintosh, the lake is one of the Inland Fisheries Service’s extended-season waters: open from 1 August 2026 to 30 May 2027, the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 31 May, computed on the species card, with a bag of 12 fish over 300 mm.
Where to fish it
The access points off the Murchison Highway and the roads near Tullah reach the shore of Lake Rosebery, and a boat launched where Hydro Tasmania allows covers the drowned timber, which is the fishery and the hazard. The creek mouths fish after rain. The creek mouths along the northern shore fish well after rain.
Planning a visit
Rosebery and Tullah, at either end of the lake, have supplies and accommodation, and Queenstown is further south. A boat and a sounder are the way to fish the drowned timber, and the extended season keeps Rosebery open until the end of May.
