Fishing Little Pine Lagoon: the full guide
The lake
Little Pine Lagoon is a small, shallow Hydro Tasmania storage on the Central Plateau beside the Marlborough Highway between Bronte and Miena, a lagoon of weed, marsh and open water that the Inland Fisheries Service reserves for artificial fly fishing only, with camping and shore access beside the highway and a level that floods the marshes when it is up. It is the most famous fly water in the highlands, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are wild and are the fishery, tailing in the flooded marshes at dawn in spring, rising to duns and beetles through summer and cruising the weed edges in autumn, all on the fly because the rule allows nothing else; the lagoon follows the brown trout season the Inland Fisheries Service publishes, first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card, and the code sets the fly-only rule and the bag. Rainbows are few.
Where to fish it
The camping area beside the highway and the shore around the lagoon are the access, and the fishing is on foot: wading the flooded marshes and the weed edges, polaroiding the flats on a bright day and waiting on the wind lanes for the rises. Boats are used on the open water but the lagoon is a wader’s place first.
Reading the report
The plateau is cold and windy and the water temperature estimate, labelled as one, is cold for most of the season; the chart shows whether the marshes are flooded, which is what makes the tailing fish possible in spring.
