Shannon Lagoon
Shannon Lagoon is the small storage on the Shannon River just below Great Lake at Miena on the Central Plateau, a shallow, weedy lagoon between Great Lake and Penstock Lagoon, fed by the water released from the big lake. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page. Great Lake and Penstock Lagoon have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Wild brown trout are the fish of Shannon Lagoon, cruising the weed beds and the margins, taken on the fly, lures and bait. The Inland Fishing Code lists the lagoon with the general season, 1 August 2026 to 2 May 2027, which is the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card; the bag is five fish over 300 mm, with no more than two over 500 mm.
Where to fish it
The shore around Shannon Lagoon is reached from the roads at Miena, and the weed edges and the shallow bays are waded and fished on the fly in the hatches of spring and summer. Only non-motorised boats may be used for fishing on the lagoon, and the water manager does not permit motorised boating here.
Planning a visit
Shannon Lagoon is at Miena on the Highland Lakes Road, where the Great Lake Hotel and the shop have supplies and accommodation. Waders and a fly rod suit the weedy shallows; only non-motorised craft may be used for fishing, so a kayak or a canoe is the boat to bring.
