The Ringarooma above Branxholm
Branxholm is the small north-eastern town on the Ringarooma River between Scottsdale and Derby, and above it the river runs through forest and hop and dairy country from the highlands. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the town’s water supply intake supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Ringarooma at Moorina, downstream, has its own page.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are the fish of the upper Ringarooma, in the pools and runs on the fly and small lures. The general river rules of the Inland Fishing Code apply: open from the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card, with a bag of five fish over 220 mm.
Where to fish it
The reserves and crossings around Branxholm give access to the river; much of the upper valley is private or forestry land.
Planning a visit
Branxholm has a store and a pub, and Scottsdale has more. Bring light trout gear, and combine it with Moorina and Derby downstream.
The river through the year
The Ringarooma drains the wet highlands of the north-east around Mount Victoria and the Blue Tier, and it runs full through the winter and spring and rises quickly after heavy rain. The trout season opens in August with the river high and cold; the trout feed on worms and grubs along the edges then, and from October they rise in the runs as the water warms. Summer brings lower, clearer water and the best dry-fly fishing. The mountain-bike trails at Derby, downstream, have brought visitors to the valley, and the river is quieter on weekdays.
